Learn, Grow and Thrive: An agenda to empower rural girls (evidence from the Young Lives study of childhood poverty)
21 March 2018 13:15-14:30
Gender and Intersecting Inequalities
Gender, adolescence & youth
Conference Room A - UN Conference Building, New York

This side event is part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 2018 (CSW62). It will be hosted by the Government of Ireland and is based on a policy brief commissioned for the event: ‘Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Rural Girls and Young Women: Evidence from Young Lives’ (which will be available on our website shortly following the event).

Young Lives is a major longitudinal study of childhood poverty led by the University of Oxford. It has followed 12,000 children from Ethiopia, India (in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Peru and Vietnam since 2002. The study gives a unique insight into the factors influencing rural girls’ development and pathways.

Our 'Learn , Grow and Thrive' side event will explore changes in girls’ lives as rural societies transform, and place their experience in a wider context of gender and other inequalities. By highlighting variations between the four study countries, the event will showcase how national and local policies can make a difference. Expert panellists will reflect on Young Lives findings and link them to the latest, progressive, knowledge about policies that work for girls in rural areas.
