Placing Children at the Heart of Development: Launch of Preliminary Findings from Round 4
19 January 2015 08:15
The Press Club, 59A Ly Thai To, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Preliminary findings from Rounds 1 to 4 of the Young Lives survey in 2013 will be launched at a special event co-hosted by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Centre for Analysis and Forecasting, Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences in Ha Noi on 19 January 2015.

The fourth round of the Young Lives household and child survey was carried out in late 2013 in five provinces of Viet Nam – Lao Cai, Hung Yen, Da Nang, Phu Yen, and Ben Tre. We now have data on the Younger Cohort of children from infancy through to middle childhood, and the Older Cohort of children from age 8 until early adulthood. We are publishing preliminary findings from the survey in a series of short fact sheets - focusing on Education and Learning; Nutrition and Health; and Youth and Development. These fact sheets aim to give a brief overview of children's outcomes at age 12 and age 19 looking at differences by poverty level, rural/urban location and gender.

The combination of household, child and community-level data provides a powerful tool for analysis of child outcomes in Viet Nam and how circumstances for children are changing over time. Our findings clearly show the positive changes that are taking place for children and young people in Viet Nam. However, we also see that inequalities between children start very young, but there are clear points where policy can intervene to improve children’s growth and development. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to hear more about the Young Lives research and to discuss the findings and the policy implications for Viet Nam.
