We are delighted to announce that Professor Andy McKay joins us today as the new Young Lives Director.
Andy joins us from the University of Sussex where he was Professor of Development Economics. Most recently, Andy’s research has focused on labour issues in developing countries, in particular on gender and young people. He also works on poverty/inequality and how these are impacted by policy; informality; health issues and on international trade. He brings extensive experience of giving policy advice to bilateral donors, international organisations and governments of developing countries and was also an associate director of the DFID-funded Chronic Poverty Research Centre (www.chronicpoverty.org) from 2005 – 11.
Whilst new to the Young Lives team, Andy has followed the study, almost from the outset in 2002, using it extensively in his teaching, including supervising many masters students’ dissertations using YL data. He also participated in our most recent conference, held in London in 2018, which showcased the study’s findings. Andy’s leadership will enable the team to build on our extensive programme to date and deliver an exciting portfolio of research into the lives of the children in our four country study as they grow up into young adults.
Andy brings particular expertise to our flagship DFID funded research programme Young Lives at Work, having recently led or co-led two multi country research projects on female labour themes. One of the projects applied mixed methods to explore school to work transitions in six sub-Saharan African countries and investigated the multiple challenges young women and men experience in this critical phase of their lives (school, domestic work, early marriage and childbirth, migration and early work experiences).
I have long been inspired by Young Lives’ work and am delighted to be joining the team as Director. We are entering an exciting phase of the study, when both the younger and older cohorts are engaging with the challenges of young adulthood. Covid-19 now makes these life transitions particularly challenging and our longitudinal data can offer important insights into the pandemic’s short and medium-long term impacts on young people. I look forward to continuing the excellent work of my predecessors and leading Young Lives research across our entire portfolio' – Andy McKay
Andy takes over today from Interim Director (and Head of Department ) Diego Sanchez-Ancochea whom we thank for his invaluable leadership of the team over the last 6 months. We look forward to sharing Andy’s ideas and vision for Young Lives over coming weeks.
