Young Lives researcher honoured in Queen’s Birthday Honours list
Peru

We are delighted to announce that Mary Penny, Young Lives Principal Investigator in Peru, has been awarded an MBE for services to nutrition and health sciences in Peru and in developing countries in the Queen?s Birthday Honours List 2013: Diplomatic. She was delighted to attend the investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 28 November 2013.

Mary is Director General of the Nutrition Research Institute (IIN) in Peru and leads the Young Lives field work. Her main research interests are infant and child nutrition, health and vaccines. Mary was one of the researchers who first identified the possibility of some of the Young Lives children in Peru recovering from stunting, that led to our strand of work on nutrition and stunting funded by the Gates Foundation and headed by Jere Behrman of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mary has lived and worked in Peru for over 20 years. She has an MA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a medical degree from the University of Birmingham Medical School. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians in London.
