There is a growing global recognition of the importance and opportunity of the second decade of life. The Sustainable Development Goals signal greater attention in many areas relevant for adolescents, not least secondary education, gender equity and decent livelihoods.
This roundtable, convened by ODI, World Vision and Young Lives as partners within the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty, will bring together interested policy/programme and research organisations to discuss what is known about the changes which occur during this life-phase, policy and programming approaches to support young people in order to identify key knowledge gaps. The meeting will discuss:
- What does research tell us about the experience of 10- to 19-year-olds of poverty and inequality, and about when and how to support them? What more do we need to know?
- Are there countries, policies, or specific interventions that you think have successfully addressed inequality or poverty in adolescence? What lessons can we learn from them? Are there policies or interventions which have negative impacts on adolescents and young people?
- What are the principles and priorities for action you would like to see in a Global Coalition briefing?
A short report of the discussions will be written and shared with participants and with the Global Coalition. We also plan to prepare a short brief of key principles to guide interventions and identify knowledge gaps, for wider dissemination and to feed into the Adolescence, Youth and Gender Conference hosted by Young Lives in September 2016.
