In India, despite recent declines in the percentage of children married before they reach 18, child marriage remains widespread. In 2011 the Census of India reported that almost 17 million 10–19 year-olds were already married, 76 per cent of whom were girls.
As part of a collaboration with Young Lives India, India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights will host a consultation event on child marriage in New Delhi on 18 October. With over 80 participants invited from government, State Committees for the Protection of Child Rights, NGOs and research institutes, the meeting will draw on fresh analysis of 2001 and 2011 census data carried out by Young Lives and NCPCR to inform priorities for a national strategy on child marriage.
