Paul Glewwe is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches econometrics, microeconomics, and microeconomic analysis of economic development.
His research focuses on education in developing countries, especially the factors that determine academic outcomes in primary and secondary schools. He also conducts research on malnutrition, inequality and poverty in developing countries. He has conducted research internationally.
He authored or edited six books on these topics, the most recent of which is Education Policy in Developing Countries, which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2013. In 2021, the World Bank published his book: Impact Evaluation in Developing Countries: Theory, Methods and Practice.
He has published over 60 articles in academic journals and over 25 chapters in academic books.
He has been the main advisor of approximately 40 Ph.D. students. He has also been a referee for approximately 100 different academic journals. He has served on, or is currently serving on, the editorial boards of five journals. He is currently an associate editor for Economic Development and Cultural Change.
Before coming to the University of Minnesota in 1999, he was a senior research economist at the World Bank. He received his Ph. D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1985, and his B.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1979.
