Children are at the heart of Young Lives, and this fieldwork guide describes a set of tools that were developed to collaborate with children involved in the longitudinal qualitative research component of the study. The manual guided the third of four planned rounds of data collection in 2010/11 as part of the longitudinal qualitative research design, woven between rounds of a quantitative household and child survey. We work with two age-groups of children who were aged 9 to 10 and 15 to 16 at the time, in four countries: Ethiopia, India (in the state of Andhra Pradesh), Vietnam and Peru. We sought to document changes since the two previous rounds of qualitative research (2007 and 2008), and to understand how poverty interacts with other social factors – such as gender, generation, and ethnicity – to shape their differing trajectories over time. As the children grow older, we try to understand the differing choices that boys and girls face, and their involvement in decision-making for their lives – such as the decision to leave school, to have a child, or to migrate.
This fieldwork guide was produced collaboratively by an international team of researchers taking part in the Young Lives study. Our hope is that the methodology and tools can be carefully adapted and used by other researchers in an effort to encourage the participation of children in social research.
